Welcome to 2009
Welcome to 2009, a new year filled with promise. When the sun rises each day, there's always hope. Well, the Volusia County countdown of the top 100 stories is coming along, slower than anticipated, but Rome wasn't built in a day either. We're close to reaching the midpoint. When we finish this, it's on to the top 100 stories of 2008 for Southeast Volusia.
The results of both countdowns should spark plenty of debate as rankings often do.
We'll also have our individual accolades for "outstanding young person of the year," "outstanding public servant" and "citizen of the year."
Veteran's Affairs letter informational only
DELAND -- The Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, D.C., recently sent a summary of benefits to all veterans across the country, including the estimated 70,000-plus veterans who live in Volusia County, said Pat Kuehn, Volusia County spokeswoman.
According to Mike White, director of Veterans Services for Volusia County, the letter is for personal information purposes only, similar to the annual letter sent out from the Social Security Administration.
Investing books for the New Year
The stock market for 2008 will go down as a very bad year. Almost every stock had a lower price per share than at the beginning of 2008. It would be wise to read a book or two on investing to help being properly positioned in stocks in 2009. Here are some excellent readings you can find at a book store:
