NSB Fire Dept.: Man loses consciousness, but resuscitated after structure fire caused by malfunctioning stove burner

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A malfunctioning stove resulted in a man being hospitalized after collapsing and $5,000 worth of property damage, primarily to the wall and attic area of the appliance earlier today inside the mixed-use wood structure at 500 Pecan Ave., a New Smyrna Beach Fire Department official said.

The unidentified victim had gotten out of the house after trying to extinguish the flames, but then collapsed and stopped breathing said New Smyrna Beach Fire Division Chief Randy Wright.

Mrs. Frederick wants to see Dwight Howard in the Nike puppet commercials now that the Orlando Magic have ousted the favored Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James.

She thought Nike blew it by not introducing Howard in the puppet commercials while it had a chance. After all, Howard, the NBA's "all-defensive player of the year," had another monster series, especially tonight, scoring 40 points in closing out the series in six games.

Now its Howard and the Magic versus Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

DelNigro was born in Providence, R.I., and served in the Army in Vietnam. and moved to this area in 1988.

Sheriff's Office: Diver drowns at Blue Springs State Park

ORANGE CITY -- A 38-year-old Zephythills man died fronm an apparent drowning this morning at Blue Spring State Park while free diving, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

Robert Jones was found at 10:22 a.m. under 10 feet of water and possibly had been under for up to 10 minutes, Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.

Jones was pulled out of the water and transported by EVAC ambulance to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City, where he was pronounced dead at 11:33 a.m.

Bank of America branch in Daytona Beach robbed

DAYTONA BEACH -- A man robbed the Bank of America branch on West International Speedway Boulevard earlier today by passing a note to a teller and implying he was armed, Daytona Beach police said.

The teller gave the robber a bag of money, but also included a dye pack that exploded shortly after he ran from the bank at 2:55 p.m. The robber droped the bag, but still kept some of the money as he fled the scene.

City and county leaders to meet Tuesday to discuss flood damage

DeLand motorcyclist dies after striking tree

DELAND -- A 35-year-old DeLand motorcycle rider was killed midnight Wednesday when he ran off a curve while southbound at Old New York Avenue, near Grand Avenue, and struck a tree, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Michael St. George, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, the highway patrol said.
