NSBPD mug shots / Raheem Marshall, 14, and Samuel Hayward, 15, both of New Smyrna Beach, are in the custody of the juvenile jail today on an overnight charge of armed robbery of a gas station with a firearm.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Two boys, ages 14 and 15, armed with a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, robbed the Right Stop gas station just before midnight Sunday night, but were caught after running from the premises by responding New Smyrna Beach cops, the head of the detectives said.
"That's pretty brazen what they did," Detective Sgt. Eugene Griffith told NSBNews.net. "It was a takeover robbery."
Griffith said the age of the alleged robbers, agers 14 and 15, is not that unusual from his 22 years of experience in law enforcement, but what is the loaded lethal weapon. The younger of the two was holding the gun.
Here is a synopsis of what happened at the Right Stop, 218 N. Dixie Freeway, as described Griffith in a summary report to the media: "Responding units were able to locate two of the suspects that had fled on foot to the 600-blk of Greenlawn Street. During the arrest, officers were able to recover a firearm believed to have been used in the robbery, along with an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries were reported during the incident, but several customers in the business at the time of the robbery have not been identified."
The clerk was able to positively identify the boys, Samuel L. Hayward, 15, and Raheem M. Marshall, 14, who were charged with robbery with a firearm. Both boys were transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Daytona Beach where they were being held today on a no-bond status pending first appearance in juvenile court.
Anyone with further information regarding the robbery or was a customer during the robbery is asked to contact New Smyrna Beach Investigator Nicki Diffin, at 386-424-2220.
