NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The New Smyrna Beach High 'Cudas started the preseason strong with a blistering 36-7 win over the Wellington Wolverines.

The outcome might have been even greater had a long touchdown run by Freddie Horn not been called back late in the fourth quarter on a penalty.

But while victory was sweet Friday night, the 'Cudas know their opponent next week at home are the Pine Ridge Panthers of Deltona. Quarterback A.J. Granger understands his team can't rest n its laurels, even with the walloping of Wellington, saying, "We have to keep doing what we did tonight. Pine Ridge has a good team."

Coach Rocky Yocam said he was thrilled with his offense, defense and special teams, but added he was not pleased with some penalties late in the game.

The starting defensive unit was unscored on, prompting the coach to say, "We learned some good things tonight."
